Institute for Policy and Gender Advancement — Empowering Policy, Advancing Gender Equity.

Our work

Four pillars, and the practical work under each.

Not simply to critique from the outside, but to do the harder work of building workable alternatives from the inside.

The mandate

Research it. Build the capacity. Carry it to the room. Keep the conversation going.

IPGA’s mandate is to research what is actually happening on the ground, to build the capacity of those who make and implement policy, to advocate directly to decision-makers for evidence-based change, and to convene the honest conversations between government, researchers, and communities that too rarely happen.

01

Research and Policy Analysis

Producing rigorous, evidence-based research and policy briefs that hold up to scrutiny: the foundation everything else is built on.

In practice

  • Policy briefs with named authors, a date and a clear recommendation
  • Full research reports with methodology, data and findings
  • Working papers circulated for comment ahead of publication
  • The IPGA Journal, multidisciplinary and peer-reviewed
  • Commissioned research for ministries, agencies and development partners

02

Training and Capacity Building

Equipping public servants, civil society actors, and students with the skills to design and implement gender-responsive policy, rather than simply telling them what is wrong with what exists.

In practice

  • Policy analysis and gender mainstreaming for public servants, civil society actors and students
  • Gender-responsive budgeting for ministry and agency finance officers
  • Brief-writing for researchers and postgraduate students
  • Bespoke programmes commissioned by ministries, agencies and partners
  • Placements for NYSC corps members and university interns

03

Advocacy and Stakeholder Engagement

Carrying evidence directly to the Ministries, Departments, Agencies, and legislative committees with the power to act on it, and holding that engagement over time rather than as a one-off event.

In practice

  • Courtesy visits and partnership letters to relevant MDAs and the Nasarawa State Ministry of Women Affairs
  • Engagement with traditional and religious institutions in Keffi, Nasarawa, the FCT and Lagos
  • Evidence submitted to legislative committees and budget processes
  • Local radio and press engagement on policy questions
  • Speaking at existing conferences and panels

04

Convening and Dialogue

Creating spaces (roundtables, conferences, working groups) where government, academia, and communities can speak honestly to one another, often for the first time.

In practice

  • Policy roundtables bringing government, academia and communities into one room
  • The First International Gender Conference
  • Standing working groups on priority policy areas
  • A virtual training and dialogue series
  • Partner convenings with the networks our founding team works within
